WHAT IS A ROTARY PHASE CONVERTER

A rotary phase converter, also known as an RPC, is a type of electrical machine that is used to convert power and frequency from one polyphase system to another using rotary motion.

Three load categories need to be considered when selecting a Rotary Phase Converter: soft, medium, or hard starting equipment. Another simple method for sizing would be to determine the largest HP range to be applied along with combined multi motor start-ups.

Example: For sizing a pivot style irrigation system rated at 20HP with 10 towers each equipped with 1HP motors the total combined motor load suggests selecting an OMPQ30/90 Rotary Model.

  • Determine Total Load: Calculate the total HP or kW of all motors and equipment to be powered.
  • Identify Load Type: Determine if loads are hard-starting (e.g., compressors) or light-starting (e.g., fans).
  • Convert HP to Converter Size: Choose an RPC rated 1.5 to 2 times the HP of the largest motor.

By following these guidelines, you can ensure that your rotary phase converter is appropriately sized for your 3-phase application, avoiding operational issues such as overheating or insufficient power.
